Any ideas? The ground below the plane is always bright like this, regardless of the altitude (maybe not above FL500, but I haven't been that high yet, to Tu-144 or Concorde installed yet). In top-down view it disappears only on high zoom. The screenshot is from around 6000ft AGL, but it stays regardless of height, only the ring (I think) gets smaller a bit.

Yes, the reality pack one. I had it on my now old install too, and it didn't show at all.

That never helped (tried already multiple times). I vaguely remember something in either fs9.cfg or FSUIPC (IIRC) causes this, but I'm uncertain.

Maybe reducing the viisibilty helps, cause in you screenshot the landscape seen from 6000 ft above isnt so crispy in reality.

Visibility is at it's minimum in the display settings (60 miles is it?). it has further weather dependent reduction via FSUIPC.

Redusing Visibility can't help. The problem is not in visibility at all.

The FSUIPC setting can be the reason or your fs9.cfg

Try to delete fsuipc.dll(just move it from the sim) and delete fs9.cfg Let's see how it changes..

Update: I fixed it...kinda...I've overwritten the terrain textures with the HowardsMix ones (was using realitypack 1.2 before) and it made the difference not so pronounced, in fact, the difference is barely visible from the ground now.

Just use normal colored textures.. The boarder will be visiblle with ANY of them,except Default, but you can try different variants.

Just a thought - MIP maps done incorrectly/lazily appear dark from distance? that would be all texture problem.

The fix you might be thinking is this? changing how the near/far border is computed

Code:
 TERRAIN_EXTENDED_TEXTURES=1
 TERRAIN_DEFAULT_RADIUS=9.500000
 TERRAIN_EXTENDED_RADIUS=4.500000
 TERRAIN_EXTENDED_LEVELS=4

No, this parametres affect only radius of detailed textures and maximum LOD. THey can't affect "colorness". Maximum thay can- do a slighly bigger difference of resolutions of texture IN and OUT of "square of detail texture" and adjust a size of the this square(by "square" I mean this "cyrcle-to-square" form, there the detail textures are drawn.).
